In the spring of last year, I woke up to the fact that I hadn’t been very happy for about the past ten years. From 24-34, I had been on a path of going to school to become an artist, then working for myself and starting multiple small businesses. The whole time I was in school I kept telling myself that it was ok that I was stressed and anxious all the time because life would be better after finals, or after winter break, or even after I graduated. Later after school, I started my second and third businesses, and it was the same story. Oh, I’ll be happy when… Later… Sometimes, but not Now.
But something changed in the spring of last year. I made a decision. I decided that nothing was more important than being happy right now in the present moment, today. I started asking myself a very simple embodiment question every morning. What would make me happy, now today, instead of what do I think will make money, or what would be good for my business a year from now or two years down the line. I started coaching myself around this and made it a game. Every day I came up with three words of how I wanted to feel.
and then because I am slightly obsessed with ink, I drew those words somewhere on my body. Somewhere where I would see them and be reminded of how I wanted to feel throughout the day.

And then because of the words I had written, I started making different choices. Maybe a friend would call me at 5pm on a Tuesday, and instead of saying “No I can’t go swimming with you I have too much work to do right now”, I remembered what I had said that morning about how wanted to feel

and I closed my laptop and joyfully went swimming with my friends.
Eventually I stopped writing on my arm with a sharpie because I know who I want to feel.

So my dear,
how do you want to feel today?
