Things my Mother Said to me, Poems.
Things my Mother Said to me, Poems.
Don't talk about money. "It's rude to ask/tell how much things cost". She says.
Don't wear white. It will be dirty in five minutes.
Don't be lazy.
The only shame is not to wear your clothes.
Be nice. Clean up after yourself.
She taught me other things without words too.
Don't take up too much space.
Offer invisible labor when you are invited to dinner,
be sure to be the last one there helping the host by doing all of the dishes from her party.
Don't spend all of your money in one place.
Seeing me off to summer camp, she included a bag of nickels in my lunch box along side of my perfectly unhealthy yet delicious lunch meat sandwiches, a note saying, "don't spend all your money in one place. :-). HA HA HA"
Have a sense of human.
One Thanksgiving I invited a stray boyfriend home for, the year I was living outside Philly.
He was quick to notice how you and I walk.
We both shuffle our feet in the snow.
What are the things our mothers told us?
What have we learned?
